Often, writers are so focused on the end goal of getting published, they completely forget the business side of the job. Whichever route you choose to pursue publishing through, it’s vital you start thinking about how to position yourself in the market. This means understanding YOUR brand and how it supports YOUR story.
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the fundamentals necessary to building and amplifying a brand. There will be three phases to this workshop, and each phase will be bridged by a Q&A or opportunities to share with the room.
Identifying Your Brand
We’ll begin with an interactive exploration of what, exactly, defines a personal brand and why understanding your brand is vital to your success as an author. We’ll work together to establish your unique core pillars, which support everything else you do!
Building & Growing a Platform
Once you know your brand, you need to get it out in the world. The first place to start? Your own domain! Websites are YOUR sandbox, no one else’s. It will be seen by readers, agents, and publishers, so it’s important you make a good impression. We’ll explore what the must-haves for your website are, discuss tools to make upkeep easy, and collaborate to build a 3-month SEO-friendly content calendar for your blog.
Engaging Your Audience
Now that you have a brand and a place to direct readers, it’s time to get in front of them! Social media is a necessary evil, but it doesn’t have to suck the soul out of you. We’ll evaluate each major platform’s reach opportunities and explore best practices for organically growing an engaged audience.
Marketing might seem like a daunting hill to climb, but it doesn’t have to be. I believe in making marketing as painless as possible, both for you and your audience, which is why this workshop focuses solely on organic marketing, not paid media marketing.
Bring your questions. Raise your hands. We’re all in this together, and by the time you leave this workshop, you’ll have the foundations of a street team to help support you.
Cheat sheets will be provided!
